International Conference on Deinstitutionalization
16th March 2006
Press release
At the opening of the International Conference on Deinstitutionalization: Disseminating a Model of Good Practices, taking place in Bucharest, 17-18 March 2006, Baroness Nicholson will comment:
“I warmly welcome the splendid work of Hope and Homes for Children whose example on the setting up of a small, family style homes in Romania to replace old style institutional care has been widely replicated in neighbouring states. The public/private partnership Hope and Homes for Children demonstrated so successfully in Maramures County has been exemplary. The Children’s High Level Group is proud to be associated with this work and earlier to have been an active partner of regional Manager Georgette Mulheir. UNICEF’s sponsorship of the final document was also essential.”
Baroness Nicholson will add: “Romania has a successful record of achievement in her reforms of child protection in recent years, as evidenced by Commissioner Olli Rehn’s Parliamentary answer in Strasbourg on Tuesday of this week. The Government’s reforms on health, based on proposals jointly submitted by the CHLG, the appropriate Government departments and UNICEF build on previous reforms and will close the current very serious health gap for families and children over the coming months and years.”
Ends.
