Council of Europe

The Council of Europe, based in Strasbourg (France), now covers virtually the entire European continent, with its forty-seven member countries. Founded in May 1949 by ten countries, the Council of Europe seeks to develop throughout Europe common and democratic principles based on the Convention on Human Rights and other reference texts on the protection of individuals.

Baroness Nicholson is a member of the United Kingdom Delegation to the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe and the European Security and Defence Assembly (also known as the Western European Union). She is a member of the Alliance of the Liberal and Democrats for Europe group, and sits on the Equal Opportunities for Women and Men Committee.
