Baroness Nicholson of Winterbourne MEP is currently World Health Organisation Special Envoy for Health, Peace and Development, an honorary post that was recently reconfirmed.
She is a former Board Member of UNICEF (UK), Director of Save the Children (UK), consultant to Barnardos, National Children’s Homes, Westminster Children’s Hospital, & Foster Parents, Plan and other international NGOs working with families and children, and chair. She was a founder member of Save the Children Alliance and of the Netherlands Save the Children.
She has worked on child welfare with many governments and NGOs in Europe, India, Africa, South and Central America, the USA, Russia, the Arabian Peninsula, Iran, Afghanistan and Pakistan.
She is Co-Chairman of the Romanian Children’s High Level Group, serving alongside Prime Minister Popescu Tariceanu and European Commissioner Günter Verheugen.
She chairs the AMAR International Charitable Foundation, an NGO working in the Islamic world on Mother Child Health, primary healthcare, preventative healthcare and education.
She is a founder member of the Booker Prize Foundation for English Fiction, the Booker Russian Foundation and the Caine Prize for African Writing, three NGOs whose work lies in developing and rewarding creative writing internationally.
She serves in an honorary capacity as Patron, Vice Patron, President, Vice President, of over fifty other NGOs, whose work covers a wide spectrum of social needs and the arts.
In her private life, BNoW is a step-mother and step-grandmother. She has been a foster carer, Guardian ad litem and in loco parentis to several adolescents in need of medical, psychiatric or temporary care at the request of the young people themselves and their families or guardians.
